Donates Solar Lanterns to Classrooms to Help Improve Students’ Learning Experience

(Mandalay, Myanmar, 25 February, 2016) – MPT, Myanmar’s first and leading telecommunications operator, held ceremony at the Phaung Daw Oo Monastic Education School in Mandalay today in conjunction with its donation of 837 solar lanterns designed to provide light and electricity to monastic schools in the region. The solar lanterns, which are also scheduled to be distributed to schools in the neighboring regions of Sagaing and Magway, will be set up in classrooms and the schools’ facilities to help improve students’ learning experience.

The donation was made possible by the generous contributions of MPT customers who successfully made their bids at the recent MPT Vanity Numbers Auction, a CSR initiative to raise funds to provide the solar lanterns. The auction attracted 164 people with bids going as high as Ks.22 Million each on 126 highly-coveted numbers with 5-7 repeated digits.

“Thanks to the generous contributions and goodwill of MPT customers, we are able to make a positive difference for these monastic schools that provide free education to underprivileged students. This innovative initiative brings light and electricity to those who would otherwise not have access and demonstrates our commitment to improve the lives of the Myanmar people and the economically disadvantaged. Following our successful charity auction, we are pleased to see the culmination of this CSR initiative supporting the growth and development of bright young minds here,” enthused Mr.Yoshiaki Benino, Chief Operation Officer of MPT-KSGM Joint Operation.

The solar lanterns will be distributed through the Phaung Daw Oo Monastic Education School to the respective townships in the regions where the monastic schools that do not have electricity are located.

Accepting the contribution of solar lanterns for the monastic schools was the Venerable Sayardaw Bhaddanta Nayaka, Head Monk of Phaung Daw Oo Monastery and the Mandalay Region Executive for Monastic Education. “We would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to MPT and its customers for the charitable donation to help improve the classroom conditions for our students. The kind support means a lot for the monastic schools and their students as they are now able to pursue their studies in a better and brighter environment,” said Sayardaw.

Also in attendance at the ceremony were Mr. Shinjiro Hara, Chief Financial Officer of MPT-KGSM Joint Operation, senior members of the monastic order in Phaung Daw Oo and school administrators.

The solar lanterns are products of Panasonic known as “Eneloop Solar Storage” units. Made of solar panels, storage batteries, and light-emitting diodes (LED), they store energy generated during the day, which can then be used to power the LED lights for 6 to 8 hours during the night or in low-light conditions when it is cloudy or raining. Each unit can function up to 24 hours on a single five-hour charge and has a unit lifetime of up to five years. Batteries for the units are replaceable, hence reducing operations cost as well as the need for maintenance. The solar storage units have the added capability to charge small mobile devices such as mobile phones via a USB port, allowing these isolated local communities to stay connected.
